CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Playing its first home game since March 27, the University of North Carolina baseball team topped Charlotte 4-1 Wednesday evening at Boshamer Stadium. With the win, the Tar Heels improve to 21-17, while the 49ers fall to 14-18.
Daniel Moore and Kevin Brower combined to shut down the 49ers, allowing a season-low three hits and just one run, the lowest scoring output by an opponent since Carolina had a 3-0 win over Seton Hall on Feb. 24. Moore allowed just one run on three hits over 5.0 innings, his longest outing since that Feb. 24 win over the Pirates. Brower pitched 4.0 scoreless and hitless innings for his first save.
Jason Howell was 3-for-4 with an RBI, Ralph Roberts was 2-for-4 and Ryan Blake hit his seventh homer of the season, a solo homer in Carolina's three-run fifth, to lead the way at the plate.
Charlotte's Thomas Bowker broke a scoreless tie in the fourth with a two-out, solo home run to give the 49ers a 1-0 advantage.
Carolina battled back with its first three runs of the game in the fifth. Blake led off the bottom of the fifth with his solo homer. Jeremy Cleveland and Howell added RBI singles to give Carolina a 3-1 lead. Roberts singled and scored in the sixth for the final 4-1 margin.
With Cleveland's fifth-inning single, he extended his hitting streak to 11 games, matching the team-high streak he established in early March. Chad Prosser, who singled and scored in the fifth, has hit in eight of the last nine games for Carolina and leads the team with a .383 batting average.
The Tar Heels return to ACC action this weekend when they host Virginia for a three-game series at Boshamer Stadium. Friday's games are at 7 p.m., while Sunday's first pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
