NASHVILLE, Tenn. - North Carolina senior Amy Havrilla scored five goals to lead the 6th ranked Tar Heels over the Vanderbilt Commodores by a tally of 9-5, Saturday in NCAA women's lacrosse action. With the win, UNC's sixth in its last seven games, Carolina improves to 9-4 this season. Vandy falls to 2-9.
The game was close throughout, but the UNC attack proved too much for the Commodores as the Tar Heels scored the final three goals of the game to seal the victory.
North Carolina came out fast, scoring the first three goals of the match. The Commodores answered back with two of their own, by sophomore Jeannie Crawley and freshman Jess Roguski. The Tar Heels would score five goals in the half, including two each from Havrilla and Kellie Thompson. Vanderbilt's Crawley scored her second goal of the game with five minutes left in the first half, and the teams went to the break with the Commodores trailing, 5-3.
Senior Amanda Rice brought Vanderbilt within one only 45 seconds into the second half, but that was as close as the Commodores would get. The two teams would trade goals, with UNC's Havrilla and VU's April Tellam each scoring. North Carolina closed out the game by scoring the final three goals and holding the Commodores scoreless for 13 minutes. Havrilla tallied three of her five goals in the second 30 minutes.
Freshman Katelyn Hoffman made her second straight start in goal for UNC and played well, allowing five goals and recording five saves.
The Commodore defense played well for most of the day. All four starting defenders recorded at least two caused turnovers and three of them had four ground balls. The Commodores were outshot by a mark of 26-15, but senior goalkeeper Emily Lough kept them in the game by making 12 and allowing only 9 goals.
Carolina returns to action next weekend at the ACC Tournament in Orlando, Fla. The third-seeded Tar Heels will play second-seeded Duke in the semifinals at 3:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon at the Disney Wide World of Sports complex.
