WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest defeated North Carolina 5-2 on a cool, cloudy Wednesday afternoon. The loss dropped the Tar Heels to 4-1 in the ACC and 8-6 overall.
The Tar Heels captured the doubles point with wins at the number two and three positions. However, Wake seized the momentum by winning close first sets in four of the five singles matches on court (the facility has only five courts, thus the number six singles match begins after one singles match is completed).
David Bere, David Lowenthal and Mike Murray won in straight sets to give the Deacons a 3-1 advantage. Marcio Petrone defeated Raul Munoz 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 at number one singles to close the gap to 3-2. At number four singles Trystan Meniane was locked in a close battle with Trent Brendon. Meniane broke Brendon's serve to take a 4-3 lead in the third set. However, Meniane failed to hold serve and the match was again even at 4-4. Serving 5-6 in the third set, Meniane took a 30-0 lead, but committed several unforced errors allowing Brendon to clinch the match 6-4, 0-6, 7-5.
"They played better on the big points today, all of which seemed to be late in the set or in a tiebreak ," Coach Sam Paul said.
North Carolina travels to Richmond to face #34 VCU on Saturday, while Wake Forest hosts Clemson on Friday.
