
Men's Tennis Falls to #2 Duke 5-2

Chapel Hill, NC - On Senior Day in Chapel Hill the #41 North Carolina Tar Heel men's tennis team lost to the #2 Duke Blue Devils 5-2.
The Devils started out ahead by winning the doubles point with victories at the #1 and #3 positions. Duke's #29 ranked King/Smith duo defeated Carolina's Monroe/Cheatwood combo 8-5 at the #1 spot while Bose/Pedroso defeated Carolina's Meniane/Riley team 8-5 at #3. The Tar Heels were victorious at #2 doubles as Archer/Petrone won a tight match 9-8 (3). The doubles win was Archer and Petrone's ninth of the spring season at #2 doubles and improves their doubles mark to 9-1.
The Blue Devils earned their remaining four points with singles victories at #1, #2, #3, and #5. Nationally ranked #14 Phillip King defeated the Tar Heels' Marcio Petrone 6-1, 6-4 at the #1 position. The #2 slot saw #16 ranked Ramsey Smith down Carolina freshman Nicholas Monroe 6-1, 6-2. In his last appearance in Chapel Hill, senior David Cheatwood battled the #18 ranked Marko Cerenko at the #3 position and was defeated 6-1, 6-4. Duke's final point came as Alex Bose beat Carolina's Greg Archer 6-3, 6-3 at the #5 position.
The Tar Heels earned two points on the day through tough play by Tar Heels Trystan Meniane and Chad Riley. Senior Chad Riley made the most of his final home appearance by defeating Duke's Yorke Allen in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. Trystan Meniane earned a hard fought three set victory as he beat #37 Andres Pedroso 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 (6). Meninane was down a break in the third set before battling back to force the final tiebreaker.
The Tar Heels are now 9-7 overall and 4-2 in the ACC. The win moves the Blue Devils to 17-3 overall and a perfect 8-0 in conference play. The win was the Devils 41st consecutive regular season conference victory.
Up next for the Heels is a trip to Atlanta, Ga. where the Tar Heels will battle the Yellow Jackets at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. The Heels will then spend Easter Sunday in Clemson, S.C. where they will take on the Tigers at 1:00 p.m. and wrap up the regular season schedule.
The match today was another of the events between Carolina and Duke in the Carlyle Cup. The win gives the Blue Devils three points and lifts them to a 20-17 lead in the year long all-sports contest.
