CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Georgia Tech defeated North Carolina 19-5 Saturday night in the middle game of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference baseball series at Boshamer Stadium. The 10th ranked Yellow Jackets tallied 23 hits -- the most by a UNC opponent this season -- in ending a four-game winning streak by the Tar Heels. Tech's 19 runs are the most allowed by the Tar Heels since 1998.
Jason Howell gave Carolina a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run double to left-center field, but it was all Georgia Tech after that. The Yellow Jackets answered with two runs of their own in the top of the second to tie the game 2-2, then jumped out to an 8-2 lead with a six-run third.
Mark Teixeira sparked the Yellow Jackets in their big third inning with a three-run home run over the wall in right-center field. Jason Perry added an RBI single and Brad Stockton doubled him home to highlight the Georgia Tech third.
Wes Rynders had an RBI single and Matthew Boggs added a two-run double in the fifth to extend Georgia Tech's lead to 11-2, before the Tar Heels chipped away at the lead with runs in the fifth and sixth innings to pull back within 11-4. Chris Maples doubled and scored in the bottom of the fifth, while Ryan Blake did the same in the sixth for UNC's third and fourth runs of the night.
After rain halted the game for 36 minutes in the top of the seventh, Tech blasted the Tar Heels for one run in the seventh and seven more in the ninth. Perry had a solo homer in the ninth, while Teixeira had a two-run single to highlight the inning.
Scott Manshack gave up seven runs on six hits in 2.1 innings for the loss to fall to 3-4. Rhett Parrott got the win to improve to 9-4. Parrott went six complete innings, giving up four runs on six hits while striking out five.
Georgia Tech had eight players with multi-hit games, including a 4-for-5 night from Stockton. Boggs and Menocal had three hits each, while Teixeira was 2-for-6 with five RBIs and Perry and Stockton each drove in three runs. Jason Howell was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and Blake was 2-for-4 to lead the way for Carolina at the plate.
Carolina falls to 30-24, 8-15 in the ACC, while Georgia Tech stands 39-15, 13-10 in the league heading into the final game of the regular season. The Yellow Jackets and Tar Heels play their final game before next week's ACC Tournament on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
