CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--Three University of North Carolina softball players have earned spots on the All-Southeast Region first and second teams, announced Wednesday. Junior catcher Natalie Anter earned first-team honors for the third time in her career. Senior pitcher Radara McHugh was named to the second team for the second year in a row. Senior shortstop Michelle Semmes also was named to the second team, marking the third consecutive year she has earned All-Southeast Region honors. Semmes was on the first team last year and the second team as a sophomore.
The trio of honorees, along with the rest of the Tar Heels, are in Norman, Okla., where they'll begin play today in the NCAA Softball Tournament. In Region 5, third-seeded UNC (37-17-1) will meet fourth-seeded Massachusetts at 5 p.m. CT. The game marks Carolina's first-ever appearance in the tournament.
Anter, an All-ACC and All-ACC Tournament selection in 2001, is in her third season as UNC's starting catcher and leads the Tar Heels with a .338 batting average. She also is the team's leader in doubles (14) and on-base percentage (.412), and ranks second in RBI (29) and slugging percentage (.473). She has committed just two errors this season and has a fielding percentage of .995. As a member of the All-Region first team, she is now in the running for All-America honors, which will be announced next week.
McHugh is 23-10 with a career-best ERA of 0.93. She was voted ACC Tournament MVP after pitching UNC to all three wins last weekend as the Tar Heels swept to their first conference title. Also an All-ACC honoree this season, she leads the conference in wins (23), strikeouts (204), shutouts (13), innings pitched (225.0), appearances (38), starts (32) and complete games (28), and also holds UNC's career records in all of those categories.
Semmes, a fourth-year starter at shortstop, leads UNC in RBI (31), runs scored (28) and slugging percentage (.485). She has just five errors in 178 chances this season for a fielding percentage of .972. Also an All-ACC honoree, she holds UNC's career records for hits and total bases and ranks second in Tar Heel history with a career batting average of .357. This season she is hitting .309, third on the team.
