RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. - The Carolina Courage has assembled a veteran cast of soccer announcers to form its regional broadcast team for the inaugural 2001 WUSA season. The team of Dean Linke, Anson Dorrance, and Wendy Gebauer will call seven of the Courage's nine home matches and five of the club's ten regular season contests on the road on CNNSI. The remaining two home matches will be telecast nationally on TNT.
Play-by-play analyst, Dean Linke, is the president of the Chapel Hill-based VilCom Interactive Media Company. A longtime spokesperson for the U.S. Soccer Federation, Linke was the senior press officer for the 1994 U.S. Men's World Cup Soccer Team. He was first-ever Director of Communications for Major League Soccer (MLS) and the Vice President of Communications for MLS' Colorado Rapids. Linke's television portfolio includes performing play-by-play and color duties on Rapids' broadcasts for Fox Sports Rocky Mountain.
Anson Dorrance, the Head Coach of the University of North Carolina women's soccer team, is one of the most knowledgeable and respected minds in the game. As the Coach of the 16-time NCAA Champion Tar Heels and the U.S. Women's National Team that won the first Women's World Cup in 1991 in China, Dorrance has a familiarity with the league's players, international and domestic, that is unmatched. His North Carolina program has produced a constellation of soccer superstars, including Carla Overbeck, Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly, and Cindy Parlow, to name only a few.
Wendy Gebauer, yet another product of the UNC soccer program, will also handle color commentary duties with Dorrance. Gebauer was an All-American forward at North Carolina and a member of the 1991 World Champion U.S. National Team. Gebauer has become a mainstay in the broadcast booth, announcing U.S. Women's National Team games, and is widely considered the top women's soccer broadcaster in the country. Gebauer will also call all the national WUSA telecasts this season for TNT.
Tune in this weekend to CNNSI as the Carolina Courage travels to Mitchell Field to take on Tiffeny Milbrett and the New York Power at 3:00 pm on Sunday.
