CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Three former members of North Carolina's women's golf team will be playing in this week's U.S. Women's Open in Pinehurst. Donna Andrews (1986-89), Amber Marsh (1988-92) and Marcy Newton (1997-00) all qualified for the 72-hole event that will be played May 31-June 3 at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club, which features a par 70, 6,256-yard layout.
Marsh is currently the assistant coach for the Tar Heels' women's squad and helped lead the Tar Heels to the ACC Championship title in 1992. After qualifying in Atlanta earlier this month, Marsh is looking forward to returning to action in the Open as she also played in the 1997 U.S. Open.
"After being a spectator in the last U.S. Open at Pine Needles in '96, it's a great honor to play in this year's Open as it returns to Pine Needles," says Marsh. "I'm really excited about playing next week."
Andrews has accumulated six victories in her 12-year career on the LPGA Tour. During her days as a Tar Heel, she won the 1989 Lady Paladin Invitational and was a second-team All-America that same year. She also won the North and South Amateur in 1984 and 1988 in Pinehurst.
Newton, the 2000 U.S. Amateur champion, won three tournament titles during her Tar Heel career. A second-team All-America in 1999, she was a three-time All-ACC performer (1997, 1999, 2000) and was named ACC Rookie of the Year in '97.
