Men's Tennis Earns NCAA Tournament Bid

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's men's tennis team earned its ninth NCAA Tournament bid in the last 10 years on Thursday when the 64-team field for the 2001 NCAA Division I Championship was announced in Indianapolis.
The Tar Heels will play May 12 and 13 in a regional at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. In first round matches on Saturday, May 12 the 34th-ranked Tar Heels will meet 26th-ranked Arkansas while #8 SMU will play Oral Roberts. The regional championship match will be played on Sunday, May 13.
The 16 regional winners will advance on to Athens, Ga. beginning May 19 for Sweet 16 action.
UNC has received nine bids in the last 10 years and seven bids in Coach Sam Paul's eight years as Tar Heel head coach.
Carolina finished the 2001 regular season with an 11-8 record overall. UNC tied for second in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 6-2 mark.
