CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina, the 2000 Atlantic Coast Conference champions, opens its 2001 season on Saturday evening with its lone exhibition game of the fall. The Tar Heels will travel to Amherst, Mass., to face the University of Massachusetts at 7 p.m. on Saturday night.
Carolina is ranked No. 5 in the NSCAA preseason national poll and was chosen by conference coaches as the preseason favorite to win the ACC title this fall. The Tar Heels open the 2001 regular season next weekend, with home games against East Carolina on Friday, August 31, and versus Appalachian State on Monday, Sept. 3. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field on the Carolina campus.
UNC returns six starters from last year's squad. Sophomore midfielder Logan Pause, who would have been the team's leading returning scorer, will miss the 2001 season after undergoing knee surgery. The team's strength will be its defense, led by seniors Danny Jackson, Chris Leitch and Michael Ueltschey and sophomore David Stokes. The Tar Heels lost 78 percent of their goals and 56 percent of their assists from last season.
