Women's Soccer Opens With Win Over Texas

AUSTIN, TEXAS - The top-ranked North Carolina women's soccer team opened its 2001 season with a 1-0 victory over the 20th-ranked Texas Longhorns at Mike A. Myers Stadium. A crowd of 3,233 saw the season opener for both teams.
North Carolina took the lead in the game's 70th minute when senior forward Anne Remy finished off a play that started in the attacking third with sophomore midfielder Jordan Walker. Walker ran on to a ball that was initially cleared out by the defense and fed junior striker Susan Bush on the right side. With the Texas defense caught flat-footed Bush dribbled into the right side of the penalty area and slotted the ballperfectly to Remy who finished the play inside the right post.
The Tar Heels outshot the Longhorns 21-9 on the game. Carolina goalies Jenni Branam and Kristin DePlatchett combined on the shutout. Branam played 80:58 and had two saves. However she had to sit out the last 9:02 of the first half after being knocked to the ground for a second time in the opening period. Texas goalie Shay Wilkerson made eight saves in a losing effort.
Carolina's game with #11 Texas A&M scheduled for this Sunday has been cancelled. The field at the Aggie Soccer Complex is unplayable because of recent flooding. Therefore, the Tar Heels will be idle for a full week before playing host to the Carolina Nike Soccer Classic at Fetzer Field next Friday. Penn State and Duke will play in the first game next Friday at 5 p.m. followed by Carolina and UNC-Charlotte at 7 p.m.
