
Men's Soccer Rips East Carolina in Season Opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina opened its 2001 season on Friday evening with a 8-1 win over East Carolina at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels took a 4-0 lead into halftime and cruised the rest of the way. Eight different Tar Heels scored in the victory.
With the victory, Carolina improves to 1-0 in 2001. ECU drops to 0-1.
Mike Gell scored Carolina's first goal, drilling a shot into the lower right corner of the net at the 4:42 mark off assists from sophomore Sean McGinty and junior transfer David Testo. After a scoreless span of 17 minutes, the Tar Heels scored two quick goals in the span of less than a minute of play. Junior Matt Crawford scored from just outside the box after a pretty pass from Gell at 21:53. Less than a minute later, McGinty scored on a beautiful header from six yards out off a pass from senior Noz Yamauchi.
Later in the first half, the Heels took a 4-0 lead when freshman Marcus Storey scored the first goal of his career, recovering a loose ball in front of the net after a shot by Yamauchi at the 33:05 mark.
Less than five minutes into the second period, Testo scored an unassisted goal to make it 5-0. Tar Heel freshman Tim Merritt scored his first college goal at the 74:40 mark, drilling a shot after an assist from Danny Jackson. Ryan Kneipper and Zac Morrow added Carolina's final two goals.
East Carolina's Joe Ellington scored an unassisted goal with six minutes remaining for the Pirates' lone goal of the night.
Carolina will return to action on Monday evening when it hosts Appalachian State at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
