Men's Soccer Holds Off UNCG, 2-1

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina got two first-half goals from sophomore Sean McGinty and held on to defeat UNC Greensboro, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels dominated possesssion of the ball throughout most of the match and outshot the Spartans, 17-6.
With the victory, Carolina improves to 4-1 in 2001. UNC Greensboro drops to 1-2. Dating back to last season, the Tar Heels have won 19 of their last 21 games.
Carolina took a 1-0 lead at the 6:45 mark when McGinty scored off a throw-in by Matt Crawford and a pass from Ray Fumo. At 20:49, McGinty scored from point-blank range to make it 2-0. After his first shot, a header off a cross by David Stokes, went off the right post, he drilled a shot into the net.
It was the first multi-goal game of McGinty's career. He now has four goals and nine points this season, both of which are career highs.
The Spartans cut it to 2-1 before halftime when Alejandro Moreno scored on a bicycle kick directly in front of the net after a corner kick by Kenny Bundy at 43:37.
Neither team scored in the second half. Carolina continued to dominate possession but could not score. Michael Ueltschey played well in goal for the Tar Heels, directing traffic and cutting off a number of Spartan passes and crosses in the box.
The Tar Heels were originally scheduled to host the Nike Carolina Classic this weekend, but that tournament was cancelled due to the events in New York City and Washington D.C. last Tuesday.
Carolina will return to action on Saturday evening with its Atlantic Coast Conference opener at Virginia at 7 p.m.
