
Women's Soccer Records Another Shutout Win

DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina continued its great finishing techniques and had seven different players score goals as the top-ranked Tar Heels blanked Missouri 7-0 Sunday afternoon in the Duke adidas Classic at Koskinen Stadium. The win was North Carolina's fifth successive shutout of the young 2001 season as UNC improved to 5-0. Missouri lost its second straight game and dropped to 5-2 in the process.
The Tar Heels capped a magnificent weekend of play in the Classic as Carolina scored 16 goals in the two games on 48 shots, finishing exactly one-third of its chances. On Friday, the Tar Heels whitewashed Georgia 9-0.
Missouri, which had lost to Duke 3-2 Friday night, held the Tar Heels off the scoreboard for nearly 20 minutes before sophomore forward Alyssa Ramsey scored the eventual game-winner aty 19,52 off assists by junior striker Susan Bush and senior midfielder Jena Kluegel. Ramsey finished the weekend with 12 points, scoring four goals and adding four assists in the two contests.
At 30:06, Kluegel added to the Carolina lead with her first goal of the season. She was assisted by Ramsey and sophomore forward Elizabeth Ball, who had subbed into the game less than four minutes earlier. The Heels made the cushion 3-0 at halftime when Ball scored her third goal of the weekend and fourth of the season, heading in a ball of a direct kick by sophomore defender Catherine Reddick.
If there were any doubt to the outcome the Tar Heels put that to rest in the first six minutes of the second half. Just 1:57 into the second 45 minutes senior forward Anne Remy ran onto a ball on the far post and headed it in off a cross by junior defender Leslie Gaston. Ramsey also assisted on the play, her fourth assist of the weekend. Just a few minutes later at 50:31the Tar Heels extended the lead to five goals as Bush scored her first of the season off the first assist of the season by senior defender Danielle Borgman and a second assist by sophomore midfielder Jordan Walker.
The Carolina substitutes provided the last two goals of the game. Freshman midfielder Anne Felts scored her first career goal at 77:00 off an assist by freshman forward Leigh Blomgren, her first career point. Just 1:34 later, the Heels finished off the scoring as sophomore striker Jane Smith scored her second goal in as many games, redirecting a ball sent into the box by freshman midfielder Sara Randolph. Smith had scored her first career goal in Friday's win over Georgia, also off the first career assist by Randolph.
The Tar Heels outshot the Tigers, 27-2. Jenni Branam and Kristin DePlatchett each played 45 minutes to record the shutout for Carolina. Megan Duncan started in goal for Missouri and made nine saves while allowing five goals in 67 minutes. Backup goalkeeper Stephanie Krawczyk played 23 minutes for Mizzou and allowed two goals while making one save.
Carolina's next action will be Wednesday when the Tar Heels play at #16 Tennessee at 7 p.m. The Heels will continue the road trip by playing at #21 Auburn on Friday at 8 p.m. and then finish up the journey at UAB next Sunday at 3 p.m.
