CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's Logan Pause scored the game-winning goal early in the second half in his first action of the 2001 season as the No. 14 Tar Heels defeated Duke, 1-0, on Saturday night at Fetzer Field.
Pause, who was expected to miss the entire 2001 season after tearing the miniscus in his left knee and undergoing surgery over the summer, returned to action less than halfway through the season and scored the game-winner just over eight minutes into the second half off a beatuiful assist from Marcus Storey.
The win improves Carolina to 5-2 this season, 1-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Duke falls to 4-3, 1-1 ACC. It was Carolina's first win over Duke at Fetzer Field since 1993, when UNC downed the Blue Devils, 3-2, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The victory also was Carolina's second in a row over the Blue Devils.
Neither team scored in the first half, and Carolina had the only close scoring opportunity of the opening period. Just over five minutes into the game, Matt Crawford made a beautiful pass forward to Sean McGinty, whose shot was saved impressively by Duke goalkeeper Scott Maslin. The Tar Heels dominated possession of the ball throughout the opening half but could not get off many solid shots at the goal.
Six minutes into the second half, David Stokes got off a good shot on a header off a corner kick but Maslin made another good save. Less than a minute later, Pause scored from 25 yards out off an assist from Storey.
Michael Ueltschey played decisively and very well in the goal for Carolina, aggressively cutting off a number of Duke crosses while not recording a save. It was the second complete-game shutout of the season for Ueltschey. The Tar Heels outshot Duke, 12-5.
The matchup was part of the opening weekend of competition for the 2001-02 Carlyle Cup, a year-long all-sports battle between Carolina and Duke. The field hockey team's win over Duke on Saturday afternoon and the volleyball team's win at Duke on Saturday night each earned the Tar Heels 1.5 points, while the men's soccer win earned 3.0 points. Carolina leads 6.0 to zero entering Tuesday night's women's soccer game in Durham.
Carolina will return to action on Tuesday evening in Virginia Beach, Va., against William & Mary at 7 p.m.
