Chapel Hill, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina men's soccer team moved up a spot to No. 4 in the latest NSCAA/adidas national poll, the National Soccer Coaches Assocation of America announced on Tuesday. The Tar Heels, who have opened the 2001 campaign with back-to-back wins, were ranked No. 5 last week.
Carolina is the highest-ranked Atlantic Coast Conference team in the NSCAA/adidas poll for the second week in a row. The Tar Heels also are ranked No. 1 in the South Region rankings, a key factor in NCAA Tournament seedings and selections.
Southern Methodist is ranked No. 1 this week, followed by Washington and St. John's. Maryland is ranked No. 5, Saint Louis is No. 6, Connecticut is No. 7, Indiana is No. 8, Wake Forest is No. 9 and Rutgers is No. 10.
The Tar Heels opened their 2001 season with a 8-1 victory over East Carolina last Friday and followed up that win with a 3-0 shutout of Appalachian on Monday evening. Both games were played at Fetzer Field on the UNC campus.
Carolina will travel to St. Louis, Mo., this weekend and face a pair of challenging games. On Friday, the Tar Heels will battle Cincinnati at 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time in the Saint Louis Soccer Classic. On Sunday afternoon, the Heels will face sixth-ranked host school Saint Louis at 3:30 ET.
