Flushing Meadow, NY - Don Johnson and Jared Palmer lost to the Zimbabwe team of Byron Black and Kevin Ullyet in the U.S. Open Doubles final Friday afternoon. Johnson and Pamler jumped to a 4-1 lead in the first set, however the Zimbabwe team rallied to force a tiebreak. The Americans failed to convert four set points and ultimately lost the tiebreak 11-9.
Johnson and Palmer sailed through the second set and broke Ullyet in the first game of the third set and appeared to have their second grand slam title well in hand. However, Palmer's serve was broken twice and the Zimbabwe team served for the match at 5-3.
Johnson and Palmer were the first American team to reach the US Open final since 1993. The duo will represent the United States against India in the Davis Cup September 21-23 in Winston-Salem.
