St. Louis, Mo. - The University of North Carolina men's soccer team, ranked No. 4 in the nation in this week's NSCAA poll, got the game-winning goal from sophomore Sean McGinty just after halftime and held on to defeat the University of Cincinnati, 2-1, on Friday afternoon. The win came in the opening game of the Saint Louis Nike Classic in Hermann Stadium.
With the victory, UNC improved to 3-0 this season and has won 18 of its last 19 games dating back to last season. Cincinnati fell to 1-1-1.
McGinty's goal came at the 47:49 mark, less than three minutes into the second half, from eight yards out off a rebound of freshman Marcus Storey's shot. McGinty played well throughout, winning balls in the midfield and distributing the ball in his best game to date as a Tar Heel.
The Tar Heels out-shot the Bearcats, 18-5, and took 13 corner kicks to UC's three.
Storey was credited with Carolina's first goal of the night at the 25:16 mark, scoring after UC goalkeeper Derek Moore fumbled a shot in front of the net to give UNC a 1-0 lead. Storey saw his most extensive action yet as a Tar Heel. McGinty's goal gave Carolina a 2-0 lead just after halftime.
Cincinnati tied the score at 1-1 at the 80:12 mark on Jeremiah Gallegos's goal with less than 10 minutes to play. The Bearcats played very hard in the game but just did not have the firepower to score more than once. Carolina's veteran defense did not play its best game of the young season but did enough to win.
Senior Michael Ueltschey started in goal for the Tar Heels and oversaw the victory.
Fourth-ranked Carolina will face No. 6 Saint Louis on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
