St. Louis, Mo. -- The University of North Carolina men's soccer team, ranked fourth in the nation in the latest NSCAA poll, dropped a 2-1 decision at No. 6 Saint Louis on Sunday afternoon in the Saint Louis Soccer Classic at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
Junior Matt Crawford scored UNC's lone goal of the match off an assist by freshman Marcus Storey. Crawford put the Tar Heels on top in the 34th minute with a 30-yard blast just under the cross bar. Storey pushed the ball up the far side and pulled the defense with him before dropping a ball back to Crawford. Carolina carried that advantage to halftime.
Saint Louis got the game winner with a minute left in the game, taking advantage of a defensive breakdown by UNC and beating Tar Heel goalkeeper Michael Ueltschey in a one-on-one battle to the right of the net.
Despite the breakdown that allowed the winning goal, the Carolina defense played well throughout most of the game. Sophmore defensive midfielder Grant Porter played particularly well.
With the win, the Billikens improved to 3-0 against Carolina all-time, including earlier wins in 1991 and 1994. Saint Louis is 3-0 this season. Carolina is 3-1.
Carolina was represented on the all-tournament team by Chris Leitch, Crawford and Storey.
The Tar Heels return to action next weekend, when they host the Nike Carolina Classic. UNC Greensboro will play West Virginia at 5 p.m. Friday at Fetzer Field, followed by North Carolina versus New Hampshire at 7:30. On Sunday, the Tar Heels will face West Virginia after UNC-G plays New Hampshire at 1 p.m.
