Winston-Salem, N.C. - Georgia Tech's Joao Menano defeated Carolina sophomore Andrew Metzler 0-6, 7-6(10-8), 6-2 in the singles final of the ACC Indoor Championships at Wake Forest University. Metzler's appearance in the final was the first by a Tar Heel men's tennis player since David Caldwell won the title in 1995.
In the doubles championship, Carolina's Nicholas Monroe and Geoff Boyd lost a tough 9-8 (9-7) decision to Florida State's Rodrigo Laub and Xaiver Luscan. The match stayed on serve throughout, forcing a tiebreak at 8-8. The Tar Heels failed to convert three match points leading 6-4 and 7-6 in the breaker.
Metzler earned his berth in the singles final with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory over teammate Trystan Meniane. Metzler improved his singles record to 10-3 this season. The Kansas City native posted the biggest win of his young career in round two of the tournament over Florida State's Romain Jurd, ranked 66th in the nation.
Carolina posted a 21-10 aggregate record in singles and doubles, which was the best of any of the six participating ACC schools. The Tar Heels defeated four (higher) seeded players and three nationally ranked opponents during the weekend. Carolina begins dual match play on Thursday, Jan. 31 at 2:30 p.m. against Davidson.
