Meredith Krull is a senior from Raleigh and a member of the UNC rowing team. Throughout the year, she will provide TarHeelBlue.com readers with an inside look at her team and the experience of being a varsity athlete at North Carolina.
The laws of physics would certainly say that our rowing machines, or ergs, cannot float. However, this week Joel has defied these laws and proven that we can train on the ergs as if we were on the water.
Before we left for winter break, Joel and the rest of the coaching staff created individual goals for each rower for their 6k and 2k erg tests. We had an understanding that we would not practice on the water until we, as a team, had met these goals set in December.
The results of last week's test battery showed that while we had stayed fit during break, we still had a little way to go before we could get the boats wet. There were several standout performances - Layne Carey, Allison Wheaton and Lauren Yoder met both their 6k and 2k goals but we will continue training on the ergs until enough people attain their goals.
On Tuesday we had a full, three-hour practice, as if we were on the water. We began with a long warmup, followed by a series of drills to improve our technique on various parts of the stroke. Then we began our full-pressure work.
With the ergs lined in a row, mimicking our positions in the boat, we spent most of practice working on changing stroke ratings. In preparation for our spring sprint season, we spent a good deal of time at the higher stroke ratings of 28-32 strokes per minute.
We are working to reach our individual targets so we can begin practice on the water. Keep logging on to check our progress.
Have a great week!
Yours in Carolina Blue,
Mer
