Chapel Hill, N.C.-- The UNC women's tennis team defeated Richmond Saturday to improve its record to 2-0 overall. Junior Marlene Mejia held off Richmond's top seed Jeannette Cluskey 6-7, 6-3, 6-1 to help the Tar Heels go 6-0 in singles play. Mejia was recovering from a shoulder injury but returned Saturday for her first match since October. "Her competitive edge and spirit brings so much to the court and the team," said head coach Jen Callen, "It is great to have Marlene back."
Julie Rotondi, Kate Pinchbeck, Kristin Koenig, Aniela Mojzis, and Lee Bairos all defeated their opponents in straight sets. Each doubles tandem also won their match to sweep Richmond. Coach Callen observed, "With every match, the team continues to show improvement, both in singles and doubles. I am pleased with their overall performance and look forward to our next match."
The Tar Heels will face NC State, February 3 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center at 2 p.m.
