CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - UNC senior Caroline Hill battled through three sets to claim the final victory of the day as Carolina won all six singles matches and three doubles matches to defeat the rival Wolfpack Sunday.
Hill defeated Loni Worsley 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 at flight five in a vigorous match that garnered the attention of all the spectators at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. After taking the first set with few problems, Hill lost her stride in the second as the lengthy match took its toll on both players.
"(Caroline) will never give up," said UNC Head Coach Jen Callen. "I think she was trying to do too much, but finally, in the third set, she started playing her game."
It was the final match for the Tar Heels before they head for Madison, Wisc. to play in the ITA National Team Indoors on Thursday.
Sophomore Julie Rotondi battled back from a 5-2 deficit in the second set to claim a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Jackie Leskovar in the number two spot.
Several Tar Heels easily disposed of their opponents to improve the team record to 3-0 and claim the first conference win of the season. Junior Kate Pinchbeck defeated Kristin Nicholls 6-1, 6-0 in the third flight, junior Marlene Mejia swept Katrine Gildemeister 6-2, 6-3 in the first flight, freshman Aniela Mojzis beat Myrna Bowano 6-0, 6-2 in flight four and Sophomore Lee Bairos defeated Jen Jassawalla 6-2, 6-0 in flight six.
In doubles play Mejia/Mojzis defeated Gildemeister/Nicholls, 8-4 in flight one, Pinchbeck/Rotondi beat Bowano/Leskovar, 8-3 in flight two, and Kendall Cline paired with Bairos to defeat Jassawalla/Worsley, 9-8 (3) in flight three.
Callen looks at the match as an important test to get the team ready for the ITA National Indoors.
"They came out very strong today," Callen said. "It was an important match, especially before National Indoors."
Two Tar Heels sat Sunday's match out due to injury. Junior Kendrick Bunn has shin splints and injured her left hand in a car accident and is expected to be back on the court at the end of February. Senior Kristin Koenig rested a sore rotator cuff and will be ready to play at the ITA National Indoors.
