NC State Beats Carolina For First Time Ever In Women's Soccer

CARY, N.C. - NC State took over sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference Thursday night as it defeated #1-ranked North Carolina 2-1 in women's soccer action at SAS Park. It was the first time in the 33 meetings between UNC and NC State that the Wolfpack has ever won. UNC leads the all-time series 30-1-2.
Adrienne Barnes scored for the Wolfpack in the second minute of play to give NC State a quick 1-0 lead. Barnes finished off her own rebound for the score.
Carolina finally got the tying goal in the 57th minute of play as Elizabeth Ball fed Tarpley who finished off a shot over the goalkeeper.
ut NC State got the game winner at 64:55 as Barnes stole the ball and slipped a pass to Lindsey Underwood who scored her sixth goal of the season.
Carolina outshot the Wolfpack 45-10 but Gretchen Lear made 19 saves in goal for the Wolfpack as Carolina had a total of 20 of its 45 shots on goal.
UNC had 10 corner kicks to three for the Wolfpack. Aly Winget made four saves and allowed two goals in 72:28 for the Tar Heels in the goal. Jenni Branam played the other 17:32 and did not allow a goal or make a save. Carolina also had one team save.
NC State committed 14 fouls to only 10 for Carolina. Neither team was offside in the match.
NC State improved to 8-3-1 on the season and 2-0-1 in the ACC. The Wolfpack is now in the driver's seat to win the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season championship if the Wolfpack wins out.
UNC falls to 10-1-2 and 0-1-0 in the ACC. UNC will have no time to rest as the Tar Heels go on the road to meet 19th-ranked Clemson this Saturday at 7 p.m. at Riggs Field in Clemson, S.C. The Tar Heels then travel to play at Florida State on Tuesday, October 15 at 7 p.m.
Carolina will not play at home again until Saturday, October 19 when the Tar Heels play host to Virginia at 4 p.m. at Fetzer Field. It will be UNC's first home game in 41 days.
