RALEIGH, N.C. - No. 11 North Carolina extended its winning streak to 13 games with a 3-0 defeat of NC State Tuesday night in Reynolds Coliseum, 30-18, 30-23, 30-19. The team improved to 21-1 (8-0 ACC) and NC State fell to 3-23 (0-8).
The Carolina setters - senior Eve Rackham and freshman McKenzie Byrd - spread the ball around while combining for 33 assists on the night. Each healthy Tar Heel to play the front row recorded at least one kill on the night. Senior outside hitter Laura Greene and junior middle hitter Aletha Green set the pace with nine kills each.
Greene and Green recorded four kills each as Carolina took the first game 30-18. Two Rackham kills and three block assists by Green led the team on a 10-2 run putting the game out of reach for the Wolfpack at 18-9. A powerful kill by Greene put the final touch on the game with a kill for the final point.
The Tar Heels had their best hitting game in the 30-23 second. The team hit .375 led by Greene's 5-for-7 with just one error (.571). NC State earned its first lead of the night 5-3, but consecutive points on a Greene kill, a Green kill and a Greene ace put Carolina ahead for good.
Freshman Dani Nyenhuis came off the bench to join sophomore Molly Pyles as the team leader in the third game with four kills each. Carolina started the game with a 9-0 run on the serve of sophomore defensive specialist Jayme Mitchell. The Tar Heels would later lead 18-6, with four of NC State's six points coming on Tar Heel service errors. From there UNC would never lead by less than 10 points going on to win 30-19.
Carolina is next in action Sunday at 1 p.m. as the team takes on Florida State on the road. The match will be broadcast live on Sunshine Network.
