Tar Heels Off to Great Start at ITA Regionals

Winston-Salem - The Carolina women's tennis team will advance three singles players and two doubles teams to the second day of competition in the 2002 ITA Southeast Regional Championships. Seniors Kate Pinchbeck and Marlene Mejia, along with Sophomore Aniela Mojzis, advance to the Round of 16 in the singles competition. The doubles teams of Marlene Mejia and Aniela Mojzis, and Kate Pinchbeck and Senior Kendrick Bunn advance to the Round of 16 in the doubles competition.
Pinchbeck, seeded at No. 1 in the tournament, defeated Carmen Linder of Campbell 6-1, 6-0 and then went on defeat Loni Worsley of N.C. State 6-0, 6-0. Pinchbeck, a native of Australia, will face Prim Siripipat of Duke, the No. 16 seed, Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
Mejia, the No. 3 seed, defeated Danielle Stadelmann of N.C. State 6-0, 6-0 in the first round of play. Mejia then went on to defeat Laura Swain of UNC-Charlotte 6-3, 6-0. Mejia moves on to play Susie Abromeit of Duke at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The final Tar Heel to advace to the Round of 16 in the singles competition is Aniela Mojzis. Mojzis, the No. 11 seed, defeated Catherine Brown of South Carolina 6-0, 6-2; she then came from behind to defeat Monica Gonzalez-Gordo of Memphis 4-6, 6-2,6-2. Mojzis, a native of South Africa, will face the No. 6 seed, Katie Martzolf, Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
Mojzis and Mejia will also compete in the Round of 16 as the No. 8 doubles team. Mojzis/Mejia received a bye in the first round, and then defeated Meggie Patterson and Lindsey Powell of Davidson 8-1. Mojzis and Mejia will face Katie Martzolf and Danielle Schwartz of Wake Forest Saturday at 8:00 a.m.
Pinchbeck and Kendrick Bunn, the No. 7 seeded doubles team, also received a bye in the first round. Pinchbeck/Bunn then defeated Laura Macnamara and Carien Venter of Middle Tennessee State 8-4. Pinchbeck and Bunn will play Karen Coetzee and Aimee Smith, No. 9, at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
