No. 5 Tar Heels Dominate Season Opener

Chapel Hill, N.C. - The fifth-ranked University of North Carolina women's tennis team swept all six singles and all three doubles match-ups this afternoon to win its season opener against Richmond, 7-0, at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
"It was a good start to the season," said head coach Jen Callen. "There are certainly things to improve on, but today was our first match and things will just get better."
Senior Kendrick Bunn, who played in just one dual match for the Tar Heels last season, entered the Carolina lineup at the No. 6 singles position and played No. 1 doubles with Senior Kate Pinchbeck. Bunn defeated Richmond's Courtney Klein in singles competition 6-1, 6-2. In doubles, she and Pinchbeck beat Lindsay Cox and Meghan Wolfgram 8-3.
"We are so happy to have Kendrick back in the lineup in singles and doubles," said Callen. "She is a great competitor who adds so much to the team."
Pinchbeck made her debut at the No. 1 singles spot, where she defeated Lindsay Cox 6-2, 6-1. Senior Marlene Mejia played at the No. 2 position and downed Vanessa Bagnato 6-2, 6-1.
Sophomore Aniela Mojzis continued her strong play from the preseason and rolled past Meghan Wolfgram at the No. 3 position 6-2, 6-4.
Junior Lee Bairos and sophomore Kendall Cline each fought hard to win tough matches. Bairos defeated Casey Cohen 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 and Cline defeated Katie Karhohs 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).
"Richmond's team has improved from last year," said Callen. "They looked stronger physically and played us tougher."
Mejia/Mojzis defeated Bagnato and Patty Devlin 8-1 in the No. 2 doubles match-up. At No. 3 doubles, Cline/Bairos defeated Klein and Monika Peets 8-2.
The Tar Heels will play host to UNC Greensboro on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
