Tar Heels Visit Clemson in Their 2002 ACC Finale
The North Carolina men's soccer team will play its final Atlantic Coast Conference game of the 2002 regular season on Sunday afternoon when it plays at Clemson at 2 p.m. at Riggs Field.
Carolina lost three of five games from Sept. 28-Oct. 12 but has rebounded to go 3-0-1 in the last two weeks, including a tie with No. 1-ranked Wake Forest in Chapel Hill last Saturday night. Clemson tied Davidson, 1-1, on Wednesday night in its last outing on Wednesday night.
The Tar Heels will wrap up the 2002 regular season when they host South Carolina next Friday night at 6 p.m. in Chapel Hill.
Bolowich Needs One Win to Tie Allen for Most Wins in UNC History
Carolina head coach Elmar Bolowich is nearing the top of the all-time coaching wins list at UNC.
With a career record of 173-97-14 entering the Clemson game, Bolowich needs one win to tie Marvin Allen (174 wins) for first place on the list. Bolowich passed current UNC women's coach Anson Dorrance (172 wins) in the Oct. 29 win at UNC Wilmington.
Carolina vs. Clemson
Clemson leads the all-time series with Carolina, 23-14-6, but the Tar Heels have beaten the Tigers in four of the last five meetings.
Clemson beat UNC, 2-1, in the semifinals of the 2001 ACC Tournament (played at Riggs Field in Clemson). Prior to that Tiger win, the Tar Heels had beaten Clemson four straight times - in the 1999, 2000 and 2001 regular seasons and in the 1999 ACC Tournament first round.
Prior to that four-game Carolina winning streak, Clemson had beaten the Tar Heels seven times in row from 1993-98.
In this Week's National Rankings
Clemson is ranked No. 8 in the country in this week's NSCAA coaches' poll, No. 6 in the Soccer America poll and No. 7 in the Soccer Times coaches poll. Carolina is No. 23, No. 23 and No. 25, respectively, in the same polls.
Crawford Approaching UNC's Single-Season Assist Record
Senior midfielder Matt Crawford enters the Clemson match with an ACC-leading 13 assists this season. The single-season UNC assist record is 15, set by Victor Suarez in 1994 and later tied by Michael Bucy in 2000.
The 13 assists are a career high for Crawford, whose previous best was eight in 2001.
Kneipper Fifth in School History with 33 Career Goals
Senior forward Ryan Kneipper has been on a hot streak of late. He scored both UNC goals in the Oct. 22 win over George Mason, had a goal and an assist in the 2-2 tie with #1 Wake Forest and had an assist in the 3-0 win over UNC Wilmington.
Kneipper leads the Tar Heels with 12 goals this season. He has 33 career goals, ranking fifth in school history. Caleb Norkus is fourth with 40 goals and Derek Missimo holds the all-time record with 56 career goals.
He has 81 career points as a Tar Heel and needs a single point to move into the top 10 on the school's all-time points chart. Tony Johnson and Carey Talley are tied for ninth place with 82 career points.
