Metzler, Monroe Advance To Round Of 32 At All-America Tourney

CHATTANOOGA, TENN. - Juniors Nicholas Monroe and Andy Metzler of the University of North Carolina have advanced to the Round of 32 Saturday at the Icy Hot/Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-America Championships Prequalifying Tournament being played at the Champions Club. Four Tar Heel doubles teams are also still alive in the competition.
Metzler and Monroe will both play singles matches in the Round of 32 Sunday morning at 9 a.m. Metzler will take on Johan Berg while Monroe takes on Alex Menichini.
oth Tar Heels advanced to the round of 32 with a troika of singles victories on Friday and Saturday. Metzler defeated Matt Mayer 6-2, 6-3 in the round of 256, Masias Serrano 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 128 and Brett Ross 6-4, 6-1 in the round of 64. Monroe advanced with triumphs over Jerome Le Belicard 6-2, 6-4 in the round of 256, Dino Mancarella 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 128 and Josh Tarkoff 6-2, 6-0 in the round of 64. Sophomore Daniel Pinchbeck won a pair of matches before being downed in the round of 64. Pinchbeck defeated Mike Placek 6-4, 6-1 in the round of 256 and Luis Agurrevere 6-2, 7-5 in the round of 128 before being eliminated by Bart Scott 6-2, 6-0.
Five other Tar Heels were eliminated from the tournament in the opening round of 256. Sophomore Geoff Boyd lost to Jason Pongsrikul 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, freshman Brad Pomeroy fell to Andy Formanczyk 6-1, 7-6 (7-5), junior Ben Aiken slipped against Ryan Stotland 6-3, 6-3, sophomore Jonathan Janda was bested by Anthony Jackson 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) and senior Greg Archer lost to Ikaika Jobe, 6-0, 7-6.
All four UNC doubles teams are still alive in the tournament. Monroe and Pinchbeck defeated Willy Gali and Pepe Mendoza in the round of 128 by a 9-8 score (9-7 in the tiebreaker). The Tar Heel duo will meet Kadner and Malmgren at 11:30 a.m. Sunday in the round of 64. Archer and Boyd of UNC defeated Zach Bowman and Andrew Harris in the round of 64 and will play Gabe Coren and Daniel Jung Sunday at 11 a.m. Aiken and Metzler received a bye in the round of 128 and they are now in the round of 64 to meet James Cameron and Patrick Fillnow at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. Jonathan Janda and Brad Pomeroy will play in the round of 128 on Sunday at 9 a.m. versus Luis Aguerrevere and Garrot Fischer.
