CHAPEL HILL --- Freshman forward David Noel scored 23 points and added 14 rebounds, two blocks and two steals to lead the "White" to a 102-95 win over the "Blue" in the University of North Carolina's annual intrasquad men's basketball scrimmage Saturday at the Smith Center.
The game was played in front of 14,125 fans, the largest paying crowd to ever watch the Blue-White game.
"It is fun to see the guys in uniform running up and down the floor, playing unselfishly and playing hard," said head coach Matt Doherty. "I think we have some things to work on, which is exciting."
Noel made 9 of 11 shots from the floor and had a game-high 14 rebounds. He was one of five players in double figure scoring for the "White." He was joined in double figures by sophomore Melvin Scott (19 points, seven assists, four assists), freshman Raymond Felton (17 points), senior Will Johnson (16 points) and freshman center Damion Grant (12 points, nine rebounds).
Felton added 10 assists and had only three turnovers.
Freshman Rashad McCants led the "Blue" and all scorers with 36 points. McCants made 15 of 26 shots from the floor, including 5 of 11 from three-point range, and had eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
Sophomore forward Jawad Williams added 30 points for the "Blue." Senior guard Jonathan Holmes led "Blue" with nine assists, and sophomore Jackie Manuel had 12 points, six assists and four steals. Freshman center Byron Sanders had six rebounds.
"I think we got a lot of things accomplished," Williams said. "We showed what we can do and we have to get ready to put it together now. We have a lot of mismatches in all areas. We have shooters, people who can drive the ball and we have big bodies - I think we're ready to go."
"White" led the "Blue" 57-48 at the half. Last year, the teams combined for 55 points in the first half and 123 for the game.
Carolina returns to action next Saturday at 4:30 p.m. against the EA Sports Southeast All-Stars. Tickets are available.
