Chapel Hill, N.C. - Matt Crawford, a senior midfielder on the University of North Carolina men's soccer team, was named on Wednesday to the Verizon Academic All-America first team. Crawford, who was named to the Verizon Academic All-District III team earlier this month, is Carolina's first Academic All-America since Michael Bucy was a three-time honoree from 1998-2000.
Crawford (Durham, N.C.) is the only Atlantic Coast Conference player listed on the first- and second-team for 2002. He leads the ACC this season with 13 assists. He was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa last spring and earned Dean's List and ACC Honor Roll recognition in each of his first three years at UNC.
Crawford represented UNC at the 2002 NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference in the summer of 2002. He also is a member of the Student-Athlete Leadership Committee at Carolina and has served as an Athletes Coming Together (ACT) mentor on the UNC campus.
The Tar Heels will open their NCAA title defense on Friday evening against Winthrop at 6:30 p.m. at Fetzer Field. The winner of Friday's game will advance to play at Penn State next Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
