NORFOLK, Va. - The North Carolina field hockey team fell 4-2 to Princeton Sunday in its final game of the regular season. With the loss, eighth-ranked Carolina is 9-10, while No. 14 Princeton improved to 9-6.
Playing on neutral ground at Old Dominion's Foreman Field, Princeton scored first, on a penalty corner in the ninth minute. Cory Picketts had the goal, assisted by Natalie Martirosian and Ilvy Friebe. UNC evened the game in the 32nd minute, when sophomore Kerry Falgowski scored from the field, assisted by sophomore Kelsey Keeran. Less than two minutes before halftime, Martirosian scored on a penalty corner to give Princeton a 2-1 lead heading into the break.
After halftime, Princeton scored twice from the field to go up 4-1. Rachael Becker got an unassisted goal in the 50th minute and Martirosian tacked on another with less than three minutes to play.
With 1:59 remaining in the game, Carolina's Amber Chambers scored the game's final goal on a penalty corner, assisted by sophomore Laura Douglas.
Princeton led 16 to 14 in shots, 9 to 3 in the first half. UNC had just one corner in the first half, but 10 in the second for a total of 11. Princeton had 10 corners, eight of them in the first half.
North Carolina is the No. 2 seed in the Atlantic Coast Conference field hockey tournament, which begins on Thursday at Duke. UNC opens play on Friday at 4 p.m. in a semifinal game against No. 3 Maryland.
