Nov. 12, 1995: Field Hockey Rolls In NCAA Tournament
By Rick Brewer, SID Emeritus
CHAPEL HILL-- Carolina got two goals each from Nancy Pelligreen and Sussanna Schott to roll over Princeton in the second round of the NCAA Field Hockey Championships on Navy Field.
The win equaled Carolina's most-one sided victory of the season. The six goals were also the most the Tar Heels had ever scored in an NCAA Tournament game.
Carolina ran its record to 22-0 by outshooting Princeton 24-8 and having a 14-4 edge in penalty corners. The Tigers finished their season at 14-4.
Pelligreen opened the scoring with 27:21 left in the first half. Carolina then added two more goals in the final 10 minutes of the first period to take a 3-0 lead at intermission.
Schott scored off a penalty corner with 9:32 remaining. Ashley Hanson then followed up a Pelligreen shot for a 3-0 lead with just 2:08 to go.
Any hopes the Tigers might have had of a comeback were killed early in the second half. Kate Barber, the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, fired home an unassisted goal with 22:08 left for a 4-0 advantage. It was Barber's 23rd goal of the season.
Schott and Pelligreen added a pair of late goals for the final 6-0 win. Schott scored at the 4:29 mark and Pelligreen added her second goal with just two seconds on the clock.
Pelligreen, Abbi Keller and Kim Schroll had first-half assists.
Goalkeeper Jana Withrow posted her 12th shutout of the season. The Tar Heel defense held Princeton scoring leader Lisa Rebane to no shots on goal.
The win sent Carolina into the national semi-finals for the ninth time.
