Tar Heels Host South Carolina in Regular-Season Finale
The North Carolina men's soccer team will play its final regular-season game of the 2002 on Friday evening when it hosts South Carolina at 6 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
The game marks the final regular-season home appearances for UNC seniors Matt Crawford, Mike Gell, Ryan Kneipper and David Testo.
Carolina lost three of five games from Sept. 28-Oct. 12 but has gone 5-0-1 in its last six games, including a tie with No. 1-ranked Wake Forest in Chapel Hill on Oct. 26 and a 3-1 win at No. 6 Clemson on Nov. 3.
Bolowich Needs One Victory for Most Wins in UNC History
Carolina head coach Elmar Bolowich has reached the top of the all-time coaching wins list at UNC.
With a career record of 174-97-14 entering the South Carolina game, Bolowich needs one win to pass Marvin Allen (174 wins) for first place on the list. Bolowich passed current UNC women's coach Anson Dorrance (172 wins) in the Oct. 29 win at UNC Wilmington.
Tar Heels Clinch #3 Seed in ACC Tournament, Will Face Clemson in Opening Round
Carolina scored three second-half goals to earn an impressive road win over No. 6-ranked Clemson on Nov. 3. With the victory, the Tar Heels clinched the No. 3 seed in the ACC Tournament, to be held Nov. 14-17 in Cary, N.C.
The Tar Heels will face Clemson in the opening round on Thursday, Nov. 14, at 8 p.m. at SAS Stadium, the home of the WUSA's Carolina Courage.
Wake Forest, ranked No. 1 in the nation, is the top seed with an ACC record of 4-0-2. Maryland (4-2-0) is the No. 2 seed, followed by UNC (3-2-1), No. 4 seed Virginia (3-3-0), No. 5 seed Duke (3-3-0), No. 6 seed Clemson (2-3-1) and No. 7 seed NC State (0-6-0).
The meeting will mark the third time in the last four years that Carolina and Clemson have met in the ACC Tournament. In the 1999 opening round, Matt Laycock scored the game's only goal in overtime for a 1-0 UNC win in Winston-Salem, N.C. In 2001, the Tigers beat the Tar Heels, 2-1, in the semifinals at Riggs Field in Clemson.
The winner of Thursday night's Carolina-Clemson game will advance to play the winner of the Maryland-NC State game on Friday, Nov. 15, at 8 p.m. The championship game will be played on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m. and will be televised by Fox Sports Net South, Comcast Sports Net and the Sunshine Network.
