Carolina Finishes Eighth At Reno Tournament of Champions

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina wrestling team finished in eighth place at the Reno Tournament of Champions this evening. The tournament hosted 22 teams, including five ranked in the Top 25-No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 10 Arizona State, No. 17 Edinboro, No. 23 Boise State and No. 24 Fresno State. OSU took first place scoring 139 points. UNC Scored 62.50 points with three wrestlers finishing in the top five-Sophomores Chris Rodrigues (Marietta, Ga.), Evan Sola (Wernersville, Pa.) and freshman David Dashiell (Chesapeake, Va.).
No. 3 seed Rodrigues finished the 125-weight class in third place. He fell to second-seeded Skyler Holman (Oklahoma State), 9-5, in the semifinals. Rodrigues defeated fifth-seeded Jordon Sianni (Pittsburgh), 12-7, for third place.
No. 8 seed Sola fell to top seeded, and defending national champion at 133 pounds, Johnny Thompson (Oklahoma State), 8-3. He went on to defeat fifth seeded Shawn Bunch (Edin), 6-2, for fifth place.
Unseeded Dashiell advanced through to the semifinals winning four matches in a row. He then dropped his first match of the tournament to three seeded David Shunamon (Edin), 11-3, and fell for the second time to eighth-seeded Ryan Bader (Arizona State), 7-1. He ended the tournament in fourth place.
UNC will travel to Evanston, Ill., for the annual Midlands Tournament on Dec. 28 and 29. The tournament will last all day on Saturday and Sunday.
