CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--The University of North Carolina softball team will play the first games in its new UNC Softball Complex on Saturday, hosting 20th-ranked South Carolina for a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
The Tar Heels' new field is located off Raleigh Road/Highway 54, behind the UNC General Administration building. Admission to the games is free. North Carolina football coach John Bunting will throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Saturday.
Carolina is 5-5 on the season following a strong performance in last weekend's Triangle Classic, the 21-team tournament UNC hosted in Raleigh. The Tar Heels went 4-1 and reached the tournament championship game before falling to Minnesota. Junior outfielder Tiffany Tolleson leads the Tar Heels at the plate with a batting average of .533 and is 13-for-13 stolen bases.
The Gamecocks come into Saturday's matchup 9-3. Last season the teams split their season-opening doubleheader in Columbia, S.C., with South Carolina taking the first game 1-0 and North Carolina taking the second by the same score.
