Women's Tennis Upsets Ninth Ranked Fresno State at National Indoor Championships

MADISON, WISC - After struggling early in doubles, the Tar Heels stepped up their game against ninth ranked Fresno State in singles play to win 4-3 in the opening day of action at the ITA National Indoor Championships. The victory sets up an early season match against second ranked ACC rival Duke on Friday with Carlyle Cup points on the line.
In flight one, UNC's Marlene Mejia held her ground in the second set to win the tie breaker and stay alive against 14th ranked Kim Niggemyer. She went on to claim the third set and win the match 1-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2.
UNC's Lee Bairos swept Courtney Jantz 6-1, 6-0 at flight six to claim the fourth point of the day for Carolina and clinch the victory.
Kate Pinchbeck and Aniela Mojzis also swept their opponents in singles play to claim the rest of Carolina's points.
Friday's match against Duke will have added importance as the winner will claim 1.5 Carlyle Cup points and advance to the semifinals of the National Indoor Championships. Sixteen of the nation's best teams are playing this weekend at the National Indoor Championships with the final being held at noon EST on Sunday.
