Chapel Hill -- The University of North Carolina men's tennis team defeated the Furman Paladins 5-2 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center Wednesday evening. The 34th-ranked Tar Heels (2-1) rebounded from a disappointing loss to Texas on last Saturday to defeat a tough Furman (1-4) team who is ranked #65 in the country.
"It was a good win because Furman has a good team," said head coach Sam Paul. "We played better in doubles today, we still could have played better, but I was really proud of that fact that we came back."
The Tar Heels swept all three doubles matches against Furman, including an 8-2 victory for Nicholas Monroe and Geoff Boyd over the #14 doubles team in the country, John Chesworth and James Cameron.
In singles action, Marcio Petrone (#73), held off John Chesworth 6-7(4), 6-0, 6-4 to lead the Tar Heels to victory.
"That's a good win for Marcio. That kid Chesworth has had some good wins here recently," said Paul.
The Tar Heels will face off against West Virginia on Saturday, February 9 at noon in the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill. Carolina holds a 16-3 advantage over the Mountaineers.
