Rowing Along: Meredith Krull

Meredith Krull is a senior from Raleigh and a member of the UNC rowing team. Throughout the year, she will provide TarHeelBlue.com readers with an inside look at her team and the experience of being a varsity athlete at North Carolina.
Five of our athletes just can't get enough of erging and erg tests! Even after four weeks of intense ergometer training and a series of difficult test batteries, Rebecca Bennett, Layne Carey, Jeanette Crets, Lauren Tarabokia and Lindsey Wilfley traveled to Alexandria, Va., to compete in the Mid-Atlantic Erg Sprints.
This competition is one of many indoor competitions, the most famous being CRASH B's in Boston. At the Mid-Atlantic competition there were several events for all ages, even a toddler race for 100 meters, and the events go all the way up to master's competitions. Our teammates competed in the largest division, the open women's races, and the sprint was the standard 2000 meters. [NCAA rules required that they race as unaffiliated competitors.]
What is even more remarkable than the initiative that each of these women took, is the outstanding performances each of these women gave. Layne, Lauren and Lindsey all set personal records, and Jeanette and Rebecca came with seconds of their fastest scores. The five women all placed in the top ten, with Layne winning the silver medal. Way to go!
The leadership that these women showed this weekend is proof that we are committed to showing strong performances this spring. Even the women who stayed behind in Chapel Hill last weekend continue to take erg tests on their own in order to make our squad stronger. I know that all this hard work will come to fruition as we race many competitive crews this spring.
