CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Kellie Thompson and Lindsay Stone each scored three times as fifth-ranked North Carolina defeated top-ranked Duke, 10-4, in collegiate women's lacrosse action at Henry Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Stone scored all three of her goals in the second half to ice the victory.
Katelyn Hoffman played very well in the cage for Carolina, equalling her career high with 10 saves and allowing the nation's top-ranked team to score only four goals.
With the victory, the Tar Heels improve to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Duke falls to 5-1, 1-1. The win breaks Carolina's two-game losing streak to Duke, which had beaten UNC in four of the last five meetings entering Saturday's game.
Carolina now leads the 2001-02 Carlyle Cup race by a margin of 21 to 9.5.
Carolina held Duke scoreless in the first half, leading 4-0 at the break. UNC got its four scores in the first 11 minutes of action. Betsy Gaines got the scoring started with a goal at 7:13 off a Brooke Young assist. Just over a minute later at 8:18, Thompson scored an unassisted goal to make it 2-0. Thirty-one seconds later, Young scored an unassisted goal from the right side, followed by a Christine McPike goal at the 10:47 mark.
UNC's 11-5 edge in ground balls in the first half offset the fact that the Heels had nine first-half fouls to Duke's three.
Duke cut the lead to as close as two goals in the second half, scoring three times in the first five and a half minutes of the second period to cut it to 5-3. Beth Ames and Stone scored consecutive goals for the Tar Heels to make it 7-3 and restore the four-goal halftime lead. After Kelly Dirks scored for Duke to make it 7-4, Stone scored back-to-back goals on free-position shots for a 9-4 lead. Thompson scored the game's final goal with under three minutes left to play.
The Tar Heels will return to action next Saturday afternoon at noon when they play their first road game of the 2002 season at Virginia in their final ACC game of the regular season.
