CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina blew past Princeton, 15-2, on a chilly Tuesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium for its fifth straight victory. The Tar Heels scored in each of the first eight innings to improve to 11-8 on the season.
Chris Iannetta, Mell Adams and Bryan Phillips all homered for the Tar Heels, who have scored 35 runs over the past two games. Carolina also has at least 10 hits in eight of its last nine games after getting 10 hits in the win.
Princeton scored one run in each of the first two innings, but the Tar Heels answered each time and led 3-2 after a two-out, two-run home run by Chris Iannetta in the bottom of the second. Iannetta (1-for-3, 3 RBIs, 2 runs) has two home runs on the season and five hits in his last three games.
Carolina pulled away with two in the third and a four-run fourth extended the Carolina lead to 9-2. Sean Farrell had a two-run single in the fourth, while Chris Maples (2-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBIs) had RBI doubles in both the third and fourth.
Mell Adams had a solo homer in the fifth and Carolina drew six walks and had one hit batter for a four-run sixth inning and a 14-2 lead. The Tigers walked 13 batters on the day.
Reserve infielder Bryan Phillips led off the seventh inning with a home run, his first, to deep center field to give the Tar Heels a 13-run lead and their final run.
Scott Manshack (2-0) settled down after a rocky first two innings and allowed just one earned run on six hits through the fifth. Kevin Brower, Scott Senatore and Mell Adams combined to pitch the final four scoreless innings for Carolina.
Princeton starter Nathan Miller (0-1) allowed seven runs on five hits over 3.1 innings for the loss. Princeton, which is coached by former UNC All-America Scott Bradley, is 2-7 on the season.
The Tar Heels complete their two-game mid-week series with Princeton Wednesday at 3 p.m. Carolina returns to ACC play this weekend when it hosts Florida State for a three-game series.
