CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 8 Tar Heels won their second ACC women's tennis match of the season in defeating No. 21 Georgia Tech 5-2 Sunday to improve to 13-3 overall.
Marlene Mejia, the 25th-ranked player in the country, clinched the victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Mysti Morris at flight two. Mejia has continued to improve her play after an early season injury slowed down her game. She has now won six straight matches to improve to 11-4 in spring play with wins over some of the country's top players.
"I'm just getting a little bit better and gaining confidence with each match," Mejia said after the win. "I feel just fine physically."
Aniela Mojzis also continued to play well with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Laura Ozolins at flight four. Other winners on the day were Julie Rotondi at flight three and Kate Pinchbeck at flight two. Pinchbeck's win improves her spring record to 16-0. The Tar Heels also swept the doubles point, a segment of Carolina's game that continues to get better.
"They're attacking more at the net and playing more aggressive in doubles," Head Coach Jen Callen said. "They're playing proactive instead of reactive in doubles."
The win improves the Tar Heels' record to 13-3 and 2-0 in the ACC. They will play at Florida State on March 30.
