MORRISVILLE, N.C. - The Carolina Courage has claimed Nel Fettig, a three-time All-American defender from UNC, off waivers from the New York Power. The Courage subsequently waived defender Jaclyn Raveia in compliance with the WUSA roster guidelines.
Fettig, who started every game for New York in 2001, led the team in minutes played. She scored two goals, including the first in Power franchise history, and added five assists. Following her All-American career at UNC, Fettig captained the Raleigh Wings to three straight W-League championship games, winning two of them. She was voted the W-League Defender of the Year in 1998, 1999 and 2000.
"We are very excited by the addition of Nel Fettig," said Courage Head Coach Marcia McDermott, a former star Tar Heel player from 1983-86. "She is a very versatile player. She can play in the back or in midfield. She has terrific experience in the WUSA. She is a true winner, and she fits our needs and our system."
In order to comply with the WUSA's reduced team roster size of 18 players for the 2002 season, the Courage was forced to waive defender Jaclyn Raveia. Raveia started seven games for the Courage in 2001 and recorded one assist.
The 2002 WUSA season kicks off on April 13th. The Carolina Courage will play its home games in the brand new State Capital Soccer Park in Cary.
