GREENSBORO, N.C. - Three University of North Carolina men's tennis players were named to the 2002 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Team named Friday by the conference office in Greensboro, N.C. The team was selected in a vote of the conference's nine head coaches.
UNC men's head tennis coach Sam Paul was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year for the third time in his nine years as the head coach of the Heels. Paul led the Tar Heels to a 19-5 record this season and the school's first ACC title since the 1992 season. Paul was also named the ACC Coach of the Year in 1996 and 2000.
"This is a credit to my staff, Marc Schwartz and Don Johnson, as well as my team," Coach Paul said.
Three Tar Heels were named to the All-ACC Team--senior Marcio Petrone, sophomore Nicholas Monroe and sophomore Andrew Metzler. All three had spectacular seasons in 2001-02.
Petrone was the Most Valuable Player of the 2002 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament as the Tar Heels beat Georgia Tech 4-3 for the crown last Sunday. He has a 25-7 record this season and is ranked 36th in the nation this season. Petrone was 12-2 against ACC opponents this season.
Monroe, a sophomore from Olathe, Kan., finished with a 23-11 record this season and a brilliant 11-4 mark against ACC opponents. Both Monroe and Petrone were 7-1 against ACC foes during the dual match season.
Metzler, from Kansas City, Mo., transferred to Carolina after the University of Kansas dropped its men's tennis program last summer. He was 25-9 in singles this season and he went 11-5 against ACC opponents (6-2 in the dual match season). He was the runnerup in singles at the ACC Indoor Championships this past January.
