CHAPEL HILL N.C. -- The University of North Carolina men's tennis team continued its winning ways by defeating the Wake Forest Demon Deacons 4-3 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center Wednesday afternoon. The 29th-ranked Tar Heels dropped the first two doubles matches to begin the dual match, but persevered to overcome the 23rd-ranked Demon Deacons and hang on for the win. The Tar Heels have now won five consecutive matches, three of which have come against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents.
"We knew it was going to come down to the last match," said UNC head coach Sam Paul. "Wake Forest is a very good team and to get four points off of them in singles is a great effort."
The day was bittersweet for senior Marcio Petrone who led the Tar Heels to victory by defeating 41st-ranked David Lowenthal 6-4, 6-1 at the #1 position. Petrone, who is ranked #53 in the nation, played in his final home match of his career at Carolina. The Bairro, Meireles, Brazil native is in his third season with the Tar Heels after transferring from Florida International University prior to his sophomore year.
"We are pretty deep in our lineup," said Petrone. "We knew we could get (Wake Forest) in the singles even though we lost in doubles."
"I'm happy for Marcio," said Paul. "We wanted to finish his day here as a senior with a win for the team. ... I'm happy for him because he's meant a lot to our program."
Freshman Daniel Pinchbeck and sophomores Nicholas Monroe and Andrew Metzler also picked up singles victories for UNC. Pinchbeck defeated Derrick Spice, 6-4, 6-2, while Monroe upended Mike Murray 6-3, 6-1. Metzler clinched the match by defeating Justin Kaufmann, 6-4, 6-2 at #6 singles.
The Tar Heels will play their last four regular season matches on the road beginning with Florida State on Saturday, April 6 at 4 p.m. With the win over the Deacons Carolina is now 13-4 overall on the season and 4-0 in the ACC.
