TALLAHASEE, FLA. - The 29th-ranked North Carolina men's tennis team swept five of the six singles matches to down 51st-ranked Florida State 6-1 Saturday afternoon in men's tennis action at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The Seminoles fell to 12-7 on the season and 4-2 in the ACC with the victory. With the win, the Tar Heels improved to 14-4 overall and 5-0 in the conference. UNC has won six matches in a row since a loss to Tulsa on March 16. The win streak includes four wins over Atlantic Coast Conference opponents.
Freshman Mat Cloer and sophomore Jarrod Owen logged the only doubles victory for the Seminoles as Carolina snagged the doubles point. The FSU tandem defeated sophmore Nicholas Monroe and freshman Daniel Pinchbeck 8-6 at the No. 2 position. North Carolina took the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches to enter singles with the point advantage. Junior Greg Archer and senior Marcio Petrone combined at #1 doubles to beat Alex Herrera and Xavier Luscan at No. 1 by an 8-3 margin while freshman Geoff Boyd and junior Trystan Meniane whipped Gustav Bucht and Jeff Scarella at #3 doubles by an 8-4 margin. UNC coach Sam Paul mixed up the doubles lineup for the first time in a while, moving Pinchbeck to #2 to pair with Monroe while moving Boyd to #3 to combine with Meniane.
The Tar Heels went on to dominate the singles play, winning at all but #2 where Cloer defeated Menaine 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 to earn the Seminoles' only point. UNC swept four of the other five singles matches in straight sets. Petrone continued his great play as he defeated the nationally 38th-ranked Luscan 6-2, 7-5 at the top position. Petrone, who is ranked 53rd nationally in singles, improved to 15-2 in singles matches this spring and won his seventh singles match in a row. Other winners for UNC were Pinchbeck at #3 where he took three sets to down Chip Webb for his fourth straight win, Monroe at #4, who won his fifth straight match with a decisive win over Bucht, Boyd at #5 as he broke a two-match losing streak with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Scarella and sophomore Andrew Metzler at #6 wh won his third straight match by a 7-5, 6-4 count over Owen.
The Tar Heels will be idle for four days before traveling to Durham, N.C. on Wednesday to meet the 13th-ranked Duke Blue Devils in a battle for first place in the ACC. Carolina will be seeking its first win over the Blue Devils since 1996. The match is worth three points in the 2001-02 Carlyle Cup competition, an all-sports trophy between the two schools. UNC leads the competition this year 24-9.5 after losing the initial Cup to Duke 27-21 last year.
