FAIRFAX, Va. -- North Carolina, ranked fifth nationally in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Association poll, out scored 19th-ranked George Mason 6-2 in the second period and went on to win by a 10-6 margin on Friday afternoon at GMU Stadium. The Patriots drop their second straight to a team ranked in the top-five nationally, and fall to 5-4 overall. The Tar Heels win their third consecutive contest and improve to 8-2.
Junior attacker Jill Toomey (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) led George Mason with two goals, while senior attacker Katie Ruch (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) totaled two assists and one goal. Seniors Kellie Thompson (Grasonville, MD/St. Mary's) and Christine McPike (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) each tallied three goals for North Carolina.
A deliberate, slow-paced first period yielded a low score at halftime. UNC took control first with back-to-back goals for a 2-0 lead. GMU responded with goals from senior Shannon O'Donnell (Vienna, VA/Oakton) and Ruch to make it 2-2 at 17:41. The Tar Heels once again went on the offensive with consecutive markers and the Patriots responded, netting the final tally of the half at 27:25 as the two teams went into intermission tied 4-4.
GMU's Toomey scored first after the break, but UNC's Thompson would tie the match again at 5-5 off a free position goal at the 35:44 mark. The Tar Heels would score two more before Mason freshman Jeannine Ohler (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) trimmed the UNC advantage to 7-6 at 42:03. North Carolina stepped up its defense, and took advantage on offense with three unanswered goals to go away with the victory.
The Tar Heels out shot the Patriots, 29-18. George Mason turned the ball over 17 times compared to only 11 for UNC. Patriot freshman goalkeeper Meg Dentler (Crofton, MD/Arundel) made 12 saves, while UNC's Katelyn Hoffman recorded four saves.
George Mason returns to Colonial Athletic Association play on Thursday, April 11, when the team travels to Delaware for a 7:00 p.m. match. North Carolina faces No. 1 Georgetown on Sunday.
