CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Playing its only midweek game of the season, the University of North Carolina field hockey team defeated visiting Radford 5-1 Thursday evening at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The No. 6 Tar Heels improved to 3-2 with the win, while unranked Radford fell to 1-2.
Four different players scored for UNC, two for the first time in their careers. Carolina's leading scorer, sophomore Kerry Falgowski, had two goals on the night, the first to open the scoring in the fifth minute of play. On a penalty corner, she tipped in a shot by sophomore Carey Fetting-Smith to put the Tar Heels up 1-0. In the 29th minute of play, UNC scored again in a similar fashion. Fetting-Smith took the initial shot on a penalty corner and freshman Karen Mann tipped the ball in from the right side for the first goal of her career.
Leading 2-0 heading into the second half, Carolina didn't take long to come up with another goal. In the 40th minute of play, sophomore Laura Douglas scored from the field on a pass from redshirt freshman Alex Otto. UNC added another goal in the 51st minute of play when sophomore Kelsey Keeran's shot from the field was tipped in by Falgowski, who now has seven goals on the season.
Radford scored its only goal of the game with less than four minutes remaining on the clock. On a penalty corner, the Highlanders' only one of the game, junior Erin Lenhardt's shot was saved by UNC goalkeeper Alexis Suarez, but senior Megan Driest put the rebound back into the goal to get her team on the scoreboard.
UNC finished out the scoring in the 68th minute of play on another penalty corner tip-in, by redshirt freshman and first-time scorer Jana Facchinei on a shot from Naomi Weatherald. "That's something we've been working on a lot, widening the goal," UNC coach Karen Shelton said of the team's tipped-in goals. "We made some progress on that tonight.
"We want to keep improving. Our penalty corner execution is getting better, our defensive discipline is getting better. This is a good team, a hard-working team. It's just a matter of us continuing to improve."
Carolina's next game is on Sunday at No. 12 Penn State. Radford opens its home season on Sunday with a 3 p.m. game against Appalachian State.
