Carolina Falls 3-2 In Overtime To Louisville At Temple Invitational

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - In their third game of the 2002 season, the North Carolina field hockey dropped 3-2 in overtime to the Louisville Cardinals. Sophomore Kim Hughes scored the game-winning goal to send Louisville to the championship game on Sunday. They will take on Iowa, who defeated Temple 2-1, at 1:30 p.m. at Geasey Field on the Temple University campus. UNC will meet Temple in the consolation game at 11:00 a.m.
The Tar Heels took an early lead in the second game of the day when sophomore Kerry Falgowski (Ladenberg, Pa./St. Marks) scored her second goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Laura Douglas in the first period. Falgowski continued to dominate, scoring an unassisted goal with 3:25 remaining in the half to give UNC a 2-0 lead.
With 13:07 remaining in the second half, however, Louisville junior forward Olivia Netzler brought her team within one as she shot and scored on an assist from Hughes. With only 20 seconds remaining in the game, the Cardinals tied the score 2-2 as Hughes doled out another assist, this time to teammate Suzanne Irwin, to send the game into overtime.
Hughes scored the game-winning goal less than two minutes into the extra period on an assist from senior midfielder Pip Sanders.
Louisville outshot Carolina 14-10. Carolina goalkeeper senior Amy Tran had nine saves, including one in overtime. The win improves the Cardinals to 1-0 while the Tar Heels will go into tomorrow?s game 1-2.
