Chapel Hill, N.C. - The fifth-ranked University of North Carolina women's tennis team encountered little trouble Saturday afternoon as the Tar Heels defeated UNC Greensboro 7-0 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
"It was an overall good match," said Coach Jen Callen. "I think our players competed well, and we are looking forward to our upcoming match against Notre Dame."
The Tar Heels immediately raced away from Greensboro, as they dominated doubles action and claimed the first team point of the match. (The team that wins two of three doubles matches receives an overall team point.) The 19th-ranked team of seniors Kate Pinchbeck and Kendrick Bunn defeated Lindsey Peel and Kate LaCoste 8-1. Senior Marlene Mejia and junior Aniela Mojzis, the 50th-ranked team, followed suit by blanking Carlin Kannan and Amanda Eutzler 8-0. Sophomore Kendall Cline and junior Lee Bairos completed the sweep in doubles competition by defeating Lourdes Moran and Emily Tanner 8-1 at the No. 3 doubles spot.
In singles action, Carolina continued to dominate the match, as all six singles players were victorious in straight sets. Freshman Tanja Markovic, in her first collegiate dual match action, played at the No. 6 singles position and defeated Emily Tanner 6-1, 6-1. Mejia, the 38th-ranked singles player, competed at the No. 1 singles spot where she defeated Peel 7-5, 6-1. The 11th-ranked Pinchbeck defeated Kannan 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 2 singles spot, and the 61st-ranked Mojzis defeated LaCoste 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Cline overpowered Moran 6-0, 6-0 to win the No. 4 singles match, and Bairos downed Eutzler 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 5 singles position.
The No. 5 Tar Heels will travel to Indiana to face No. 22 Notre Dame on Feb. 1 at 1 p.m.
